Title tags on a web page are critical page elements for two reasons:
1) It is seen by the search engines as a strong content element on the page because it is visible to the end user and treated as an important/headline type display.
2) It is the piece of copy on a web page that is most often used by search engines in the SERP (Search Engine Results Page) that the searcher sees. This is important because this bit of copy will be your marketing message to the searcher when they find your page in the search engine results of google, yahoo, msn, ask, etc.
Couple of Tips on Title Tags
1) Start with the critical keyword at the beginning of the title tab: in other words, put the product, service, etc. first - NOT the name of your company or brand. Engines will look at prominence of keywords in a phrase or sentence as well as content of the phrase or sentence.
2) Look at the title tag from the perspective of a searcher reading a search engine results page. Type in the keyword(s) you are focused on and see what competitive pages rank and what they are saying. How can you be different?
3) Keep the message relatively short. The SERPs only show 54 characters in the title of the result so keep you message tight and within this window.
